A Marriage Made in Heaven

Nobody should seek his own good, but the good of others. (1 Corinthians 10:24)
Recently I was frustrated with my sweet husband because he didn’t agree with me on a certain matter. I thought, “Terry is just not meeting all my needs.” After a time of prayer, it’s as though God shook me back into reality and said, “Nancy, Terry will never meet all your needs.” The only person who can meet all of anyone’s needs is Jesus. In fact the only way to make a marriage what God intended for it to be is to have Christ at the center. That means both partners submit to His authority and seek His guidance in every area of their lives. My attitude quickly changed.
All marriage partners occasionally try to change or control their spouse. But the road to transformation is just the opposite. It is to lay down all sense of power in and of yourself and rely on God’s power to transform both you and your spouse. This power comes as the result of the prayers of a godly wife or husband whose main desire is to please God (1 Peter 3:1-7). Godly marriage partners want to do right more than they want to be right.
As I have grown in my own relationship with Christ, I have also grown in my appreciation for my husband. I have come to see how we complement each other and how God uses him to teach me things that come more natural to him. I know I can’t meet all my husband’s needs nor should he meet all of mine (though he comes pretty close). No one can be everything to another person. If we look to Jesus to meet our needs, we will not put unrealistic expectations on each other.
When we pray and ask God to change our spouse, God often shows us that we are the one who needs changing. To love our spouse unconditionally and to pray for every area of his or her life, is the way to have God meet both your needs. Because that is God’s design, that is His formula for a marriage made in heaven.
Heavenly Father, Thank you for supplying all my needs through Christ and thank you for my husband. May we grow together in the knowledge and love of You. Amen.
